What is the role of photography today? I think it's fair to say that photography is more important (and widely used) now than ever before, and will probably continue to increase in its relevance in my lifetime.
When I was a kid people used to say "A picture tells a thousand words." Is it just me, or do people rarely say that anymore? I think a modern revision could be "Don't even bother with words if you haven't got a picture." Television, film, magazines and of course, the internet have instilled within society an insatiable desire for visual stimulation. Of course, novels and radio have not yet been completely wiped out, but in general people prefer an attractive image to look at.
But what makes an image attractive? To the left is a shot I took of the curtains in my bedroom with natural light bleeding through them. I like it, but so what? Everyone is a photographer these days, each one better than the next. I can't think of a more competitive field, especially as we move forward into the future. While I don't have ambitions to be a pro, I'd like to get a lot better personally and decided the time had come to join some photography forums to discuss with other enthusiasts. I joined canadian-photographer.com and what I like most about it are the sponsored photo contests. One contest in particular, looking for photos about Inventory Management, is offering $250 cash for the best warehouse photo, PLUS (and this is the best part) a publishing deal with the website--they will post your photo!
I think that's a great opportunity for any amateur photographer like you or I. Unless you're pro, you're amateur, because these days, we're all photographers.
